Precision Roll Grinding

Because we have customers around the world who require nothing less than perfection, we cylindrically grind rolls to painstakingly accurate specifications. When exact diameter sizes and concentricity requirements are crucial, the precision cylindrical roll grinding operation is the single most critical step in processing industrial rolls—and we're proud to say that Roll Technology is the best there is. Our precision instruments can measure, record, and adjust to minute specifications. We can achieve millionths-of-an-inch tolerances in both T.I.R. (Total Indicated Runout)—how round a roll face is at a given plane—and taper, the measurement of the variance of the roll's diameter over the width of the roll face.

Cylindrical, precision roll grinding involves supporting the roll, shaft, or drum either between machined centers or directly on the roll's bearing surfaces. The outside diameter of the roll is then precision ground, using appropriate grinding wheels. Critical to the roll grinding operation is basic knowledge such as the construction of the roll, wall thickness, deflection characteristics, and the base metal material. Between our precision instruments and our years of experience and expertise, we can ensure absolutely accurate coating thickness control. In calendering operations for extruded plastics and similar operations, our precision roll grinding capabilities lead to optimum uniformity of material gauge.

Roll Technology has the capacity to precision grind rolls up to 48" in diameter with lengths exceeding 216" OAL.

Our precision grinding services also extend to:

  • High precision rolls finished in bearings
Your precision coating, metering and applicator rolls can go from the shipping box into your line, ready to produce at optimum precision. When it is necessary to produce an industrial roll that has the lowest possible operating T.I.R. (precision roll coating, precision calendering, etc.), we can cylindrically grind the roll with its precision bearings in place on the journals. When a roll is ground in its bearings, the resulting TIR is typically lower than the specified accuracy of the bearings. Finishing in bearings also significantly simplifies the installation of the roll into a production line. The cost of finishing in bearings is usually offset by the savings in installation costs. Finishing in bearings creates a dedicated assembly of the roll, bearings, seals, housing caps, locknuts, and other related hardware. All items mounted on the journals located between the bearings must be supplied by the customer for mounting in place by Roll Technology technicians.

  • Precision crowned rolls
We offer a full range of precision crowning options (parabolic, radial, straight-tapered, custom, etc.), either concave or convex, using both conventional and computer-controlled CNC crowning equipment.

  • Anvil rolls (hardened 52100 and d2 tool steel)
Roll Technology can refinish damaged high hardened steel rolls through precision grinding for clean-up. Or, if required, new rolls can be provided.
